Community and Program
![]() "I encourage you this next year to take one day, just one day, and host a charity event at your local store or gaming community. If you want to know more about how to organize and run such an event and what drives me each year to run one, please read my article. I also invite you to watch video 1 video 2, video 3. For advice and different styles on promoting and running a successful charity event, contact Regina Cross, Lloyd Dobson, and Carsten Haese – these judges have all done this for years, and are absolutely fantastic people." Happy Anniversary! January 2012 by Johanna Virtanen Johanna Virtanen:"It's time for another list of judge birthdays" : 5 and 10 year anniversaries celebrated on the IMJ website here! Featured veteran for the month is Raymond Fong. There is also one level 3 judge anniversary this month, but it's an important one — make sure you check out the article for details on Toby Elliott Judge Advancements – December 2011 by Carlos Ho Carlos Ho:"The DCI would like to welcome the most recent additions to our ever growing family" : 81 new judges and 19 new Level 2 judges. You can find the full list here. Recommendations for L1 Candidates by Brian Schenck Some areas to recommend that candidates study and keep in mind as they prepare for the test…
Keep in mind that the Easy Practice exams are geared especially to help people prepare for the L1 exam itself, with comparable content to the L1 exam. Lastly, I just want to remind anyone considering Level 2 to make sure of the L2 Practice exam as a resource. It's a good way to prepare for the L2 exam and to see how well you might do, as well as way to get pointers on the kinds of CR/MTR/MIPG material that you may need to refresh yourself on before actually taking the L2 exam. Judge Center Issues (Reminder) by Brian Schenck This is a reminder for the following Judge Center issues:
Policy and Tournament Operations
Official Jan 1st IPG Release by Toby Elliott The new document is available here. Triggered abilities are treated the same as before, but the other minor fixes are now in force. Most notable is the change to Slow Play. In short, you can only loop to a number, not to a certain game state. ![]() Eric Shukan has replaced Kevin Desprez as leader of the Investigation Committee. As first step, Eric offers us an insight about the process the Commitee follows to analyze reports. Read the full post Grafdigger's Cage by Arthur Halavais How to deal with a player fetching for Dryad Arbor? The card stays in the zone it was in. Scott Marshall: "At REL Competitive or higher, a player is held to his choice when he had time to gauge the opponent's reaction, not necessarily upon presenting his deck after shuffling." At REL Regular, it's fine to allow the player to make a different choice to accomplish a legal outcome, and educate her what would happen at a higher REL. Foils vs non-foils and proxies by Pip Hunn A player opens a clearly marked rare foil card in his pool and asks the HJ to replace it with a non-foil version. The HJ decides to make a proxy, because he believes that playing a rare foil is a piece of in-game information. This is a circumstance without an [O], and consensus appears to be evenly spread. Contribute to the discussion and review the counterfeit and proxy policy. Double sleeved cards by Denis Filaretov Double-sleeving the cards is allowed, as long as there are no easily detectable differences leading to Marked Cards. Marked Cards – Undetectable by Andrew Alchemist During FNM, the Judge notices two distinctive patterns on the transparent sleeves that a player is using. These patterns look detectable under particular angles or by glasses with polarized lenses. What is the approach to the issue? There is no [O] answer, but suggestions mostly converge on education: show the problem to the player; explain the best practice of shuffling both cards and sleeves before sleeving; tell him how the outcome and your proposed solution could be different at higher REL tournaments. First penalty at Local T2 FNM by Gilbert Hedegaard A first-time player in a FNM has a Flashfreeze from the sideboard in his first game of the match. Upon investigation, it is found that he added the card because he knew what the opponent was playing. We got some suggestions from James McKay: "I would ask some questions and try and determine his understanding. But the burden is on Player A to convince me. To those concerned about DQ – don't forget why we do this. Education of the player in question as well as education of everyone else in the room, everyone else who hears about it and protecting the players in the event. The JAR leaves a lot of room for fixing in-game errors. But a player knowingly doing the wrong thing need our Special Attention." MTR section 8.4 vs. section 4.4 by Dan Lynch MTR sections 4.4 and 8.4 restrict the communication between teammates that left the play area; they are not in conflict. As an HJ, you can deviate under unusual circumstances, but you should enforce the philosophy as much as possible. Hidden Information Violation by Petr Hudecek What constitutes Hidden Information Violation is "intentionally and illegally seeking information that was not previously known". A player who peeks at the first card of his pile during a draft, or at a card exiled face-down as a memo is not committing any specific infraction. Educate to be more careful. Players handling infractions without judge by Petr Hudecek If you notice player handling infractions by themselves, this is not an infraction ‘per se', because the tournament errors we recognize are just those listed in the IPG. For generical violation of the MTR, you ask the players to avoid such a behaviour. If they disregard, then they are committing USC – Major. 2HG and Player Judge leaving table by Daniel Fox 2HG is not a team format. A judge playing in a 2HG event can give herself permission to leave the table, and may continue playing after returning to the table. Since 2HG is run at REL Regular, remember that the focus is on having fun. This includes the judge(s). Knowledge Pool

Rumors also say that there was a very well organized GP, with 926 players, 51 judges and tons of good time together… indeed, Florida has much to offer! (Full HJ report) Regional Coordinator: Justin Turner GP: Orlando was a great success. 926 players battled it out and the tournament ran smoothly. The times both inside and outside the tournament were great and I learned a lot from the judges on staff. Thanks to everyone for making my time at this event fantastic! I can't wait to see all my friends in Japan once more, they are all such friendly, hard-working and fun people to be around. I'm sure they will be able to run this GP by themselves – I am only really there for show – and to take the blame if it goes wrong!! Regional Coordinator: Kenji Suzuki Globetrotters: Hans Wang, Taiwan Michael Sohn, USA Rajesh Ganesan, Malaysia Shing Nien Fong, Malaysia Simon Lee, Hong Kong Woosuk Lee, South Korea Zhaoben Xu, China ![]() GP information Judge list with photos Head Judge: Scott Marshall Lincoln is home to the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers, and their proud tradition of college football. But, for one weekend in Fe-Brrrr-uary, Lincoln will be home to hundreds of Magic players, who will bring their Modern designs to the Lancaster Event Center. Friends – old and new – will gather from all over, don the Magic Judge "ninja" uniform, and help those players – and each other! – enjoy their time in this under-appreciated mid-western city. Personally, I'm eager to work with this great staff of judges, renew friendships and make new ones – and, hopefully, watch a great Grand Prix unfold. Regional Coordinator: Steven Briggs We may not have crop circles from faraway visitors this time of year, but Modern will be beaming in at Grand Prix Lincoln. The rise of Dark Ascension is going to fire up the Modern scene, and with this new format continuing to surprise veterans and newcomers alike, while Nebraska may be in a deep freeze, GP: Lincoln is going to be sizzling with Magic goodness. Straw hats and overalls are optional – pack a deck and pioneer this format with us in Lincoln three weeks from now. Globetrotters: David De La Iglesia, Spain Will it be more crowded than this?
![]() GP information Judge list with photos Head Judge: Kevin Desprez I unfortunately (some will say fortunately) couldn't attend the very challenging Legacy GP Madrid. I hope this one will be as successful, attendance-wise, and, although I LOVE challenges, much less challenging staff-wise. See you there! Head Judge: Riccardo Tessitori If I remember correctly, the last time I went to Madrid, the GP was a real blast and there were more than 2200 players; now, it looks like the tournament organizer chose a bigger room than last time; are we really going to have an even bigger GP? Come to beautiful Madrid and see it with your own eyes! Regional Coordinator: Alfonso Bueno Globetrotters: Alejandro Raggio, Argentina Riki Hayashi, USA Arick Dickerman, Costa Rica Bryan Prillaman, USA Tony Mayer, USA ![]() GP information Judge list with photos Head Judge: Cristiana Dionisio GP Baltimore will be my first GP in USA. I will be the only European attending the event and I am really interested in seeing the differences between European GPs and American ones. I am excited and happy. I can count on a great staff, a great TO, Laurel Chiat. Ryan Stapleton and Jared Sylva will be near me on the judge station, their support will be vital. This experience will grow me from any point of view. I really look forward to be there…especially if snow will show ![]() Regional Coordinator: Jared Sylva Globetrotters: Hector Fuentes, Mexico Jorge Antonio Penailillo Monckeberg, Chile
